Program Objective

25 staff members from Nextra Group, Sun International Financial Group, and The Good Studio worked at a build site in Chiang Mai, Thailand scheduled from 7 to 11 December 2015. Despite the fact that we are members from the same Group, our path never crossed until we came together to lay a new house foundation for partner families in this build. Members demonstrated surprisingly strong team spirit in our collaboration, which was no doubt an added bonus to our philanthropic work. BUILD Homes, BUILD Hope.

Program Details

Thailand has a strong economic growth and able to reduce poverty from 21 percent in 2000 to around 8 percent in 2009. However, some vulnerable groups such as migrants, informal workers, and displaced persons, are not equally benefiting from Thailand’s economic successes. Disasters such as droughts and devastating flooding in 2011-2012 also affect many low-income families. Having lost their jobs and savings, these families are unable to repair or rebuild their homes despite government assistance.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s principal overseas volunteer program. In this program which offers the opportunity to us to take part in the “hands-on” construction or renovation of houses in the world. We are able to participate by building or repairing houses for those whose homes have been affected by natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. Not only do we want to build a safe and secure shelter, but more so to build a home and build hope in their lives. We want to empower our home partners to mutually help one another.

We had traveled to Chiang Mai to experience what it is like to live with minimal resources, understand their needs and become part of their host’s community. Through the global village trip, we are able to build a strong bond with our team and build lasting friendships with fellow team members as well as Habitat homeowner families.
